SiPM

Laboratory Of Silicon Photomultipliers

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) have been invented in Russia at the end of XX century. SiPM is a novel type photodetector for low intensity light registration (at the level of single photons).

Laboratory of Silicon Photomultipliers (department №40 of MEPhI)led by prof. Boris Dolgoshein (1930-2010) since 1992 has been developing SiPMs. These compact solid-state detectors are insensitive to magnetic fields and have high internal gain, so very attractive for usage in modern experiments of high energy physics, astrophysics and medicine based with high readout channel density installations.

SiPMs with large sensitive area (up to 25mm2) and with world record efficiency of blue and UV light more then 50% have been developed in Silicon Photomultiplier laboratory.

For the future International Linear Collider a prototype of tile hadron calorimeter with high granularity based on SiPMs developed on department №40 has been constructed as a result of a common work together with PULSAR Enterprise (Moscow), ITEP and DESY. Such activity has been carried out in 2005-2007 under framework of ISTC project 3090. Prototype consists of about 10000 SiPMs and this is a first in the world large scale SiPM application.
